To an observer the Zhan Zhuang practitioner looks as though they are standing perfectly still, holding a position for several minutes in each posture. In fact they are subtly moving, making very fine adjustments to release tension and increase energy flow. The beauty of Jing Zuo (Daoist Meditation, also known as Quiet Sitting 靜坐) is its simplicity that encourages us to recognise that the one who is trying to create a certain mind state is the very one who is preventing it. When we ‘just sit’ and recognise we are already in the present we’re able to relax the busy-ness in the mind. In this instance 'Opening the Joints' is not about physical stretching, but rather using intention to create 'space' in the joints to 'tune' the fascia. If muscles are described as 'red' tissue, fascia is the 'white' tissue just under the skin that holds the muscles and organs in place. It's the engagement and use of the fascia that gives Taiji its 'soft' strength. Each sounds creates a specific vibration that benefits the internal organs. There are slow, simple movements that accompany each sound giving a deeper healing affect to the energy system. This had limited those who could take part in this experience as everyone needed to know a Taiji Form.      To enable all members of the school to partake, the Taiji Form has been substituted with 5 simple standing postures. Hence the name Zhan Zuo Tang: Zhan (Standing), Zuo (Sitting), Tang (Lying Down).      The day will allow us to experience a deep meditative quality, being able to work with this process for an extended period by rotating through the sequence up to eight times during the day. This will be a unique experience and there are only 5 places available.
